The Carole Robertson Center for Learning is proud to serve Albany Park families through high-quality early childhood education and family support services. This location, formerly known as the Albany Park Community Center (APCC), became part of the Carole Robertson Center’s network of flagship sites in August of 2021.
As part of our Center’s expansion, this transition strengthened early learning opportunities in Albany Park, addressing the need for infant and toddler programs, as well as support for expectant mothers. The integration of services brought increased stability to the community, ensuring that children and families have access to the educational foundation they need to thrive.
Our Albany Park site is one of three early learning and youth development centers in our network, which also includes locations in Little Village and North Lawndale. In addition to center-based programs, we provide services through home visits by specialized educators and our network of licensed family child care homes. These programs support children in their earliest years, helping families navigate critical developmental milestones with expert guidance and care.
The Carole Robertson Center for Learning continues to grow, expanding access to high-quality early education and youth development programs across Chicago. Our work is supported by federal Early Head Start and Head Start grants, which enable us to serve thousands of children and families through a variety of service delivery models. As we build on the strong foundation laid in Albany Park, we remain committed to providing equitable, high-quality learning opportunities that empower families and strengthen communities.
Albany Park Community Center History
The Albany Park Community Center, Inc. (APCC), is a not-for-profit, community-based organization located in the multi-ethnic Chicago neighborhood of Albany Park. The Center operates a wide range of programs and services in and around the community we serve and since its inception, has been the largest social service agency exclusively serving Albany Park. The Center’s program facility is located at 5101 North Kimball Avenue.
APCC was incorporated on September 24, 1975 and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors operating under a Charter from the State of Illinois and the Board’s By-Laws. The Board of Directors applied for a United Way of Metropolitan Chicago in 1976 and was accepted as a two-year provisional member in 1977. Based on the agency’s excellent first year performance, United Way waived the second year of provisional membership and accepted the Center as a regular and full member in 1978.
Albany Park has been the site of dramatic community transition over the years. Predominantly upper-working class Jewish residents lived in the area until the early 1960’s. Over the past 40 years, the population profile has changed to include a high percentage of poverty-level and low-income working class residents from a variety of backgrounds. Although the majority of its foreign-born residents are from Latin America, substantial numbers are from the Philippines, India, Korea, Cambodia, Somalia, the Former Yugoslavia, Romania, Pakistan and the Middle East. Over 40 different languages are spoken in its public schools and Albany Park is now recognized as one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the entire United States.
