Together, we marked a tremendous honor from the City of Chicago, recognizing five decades of commitment to children, families, and communities—and the countless civic, organizational, and individual partners who work with us to make it possible.

On a sunny day in July the Center celebrated the honorary designation of two blocks of Ogden bordering our North Lawndale flagship site as Carole Robertson Way!

The event brought together the Center’s leadership, staff, elected officials, supporters, volunteers and friends. Families celebrated with their children as they participated in play activities at the same time.

The sun certainly brought the heat, but seeing our community come together to honor this moment warmed our hearts even more.

Our thanks to Illinois State Senator Lakesia Collins (5th District), Illinois State Representative Yolonda Morris (9th District), and Chicago Department of Family & Support Services Commissioner Angela Green for joining us to recognize this special day.

Our gratitude also to Alderwoman Monique Scott (24th Ward) and her office for making the honorary street naming possible.

One of the day’s most moving moments came from Dianne Robertson Braddock, sister of our namesake, Carole Robertson. Carole’s life was tragically taken in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, alongside Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, and Cynthia Wesley. Dianne reflected on her family’s decision to entrust the Center with Carole’s name. She shared her gratitude for the generations of leaders, staff, and supporters who have honored that promise.

Her words reminded us that Carole’s legacy lives on every day—in every child nurtured, every family supported, every educator empowered, and every community strengthened.

As we continue celebrating our 50th anniversary, this honorary street designation is more than a street sign. It is a symbol of our shared history, our enduring purpose, and our collective commitment to the future.
